Giving up the bus

A bus ride to school is my sister's and mine routine for nearly two years now. We usually ride two or one stop depending on the bus stop we choose to walk to on that particular day (they're pretty much equally far away) after parents drop us off on their way to work. However, we were always curious about how long it would take us to walk the same distance we ride by bus each day. The reason is that even though it seems not a far ride, the bus still takes around 15 minutes to get us to school due to usual morning traffic. Therefore, last week to decided to try leaving the home earlier by ten minutes and walking to school. Surprisingly, we discovered that walking takes at most 15 minutes, nearly the same if not faster than by bus. We both found this kind new way of starting the day very enjoyable because the weather is getting nicer with each day and 15 minutes of physical activity really get us woken up (which is our daily struggle these days...). Additionally, we get to chat for a little which sets us in a good mood before school.
What is more, we even tried to track the amount of steps that take us to get to school. It came out to around 2000 steps which is a nice addition to the usual amount we walk a day. Even though this kind of exercise doesn't speed up my heart rate I can definitely feel how such a little thing improves my day. After all, no one really enjoys squeezing with strangers at a dirty bus.
Despite all the benefits, walking to school has it's downsides as well. For example, we have to leave home ten minutes earlier to be sure to get to the class on time which is disappointing as our precious time of sleep is taken away. Also, towards the end of the week it got slightly chillier and one day it even rained (and we had to take a bus on that day...) which put as back from enjoying the walk. Last but not least, the road to the school itself is kind of dangerous as there are no special zebra markings on crossings for pedestrians and usually we simply run all three or four crossings to pass them as quickly as possible before a car comes. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed to walk and talk while walking with my sister. It's a shame I haven't tried earlier to give up on bus and choose a healthier way of travelling to school.
